Rubber Waterstops in articulated concrete structures

Control of all cracks in hydraulic concrete structures is essential. Control is obtained by articulating the structure in a manner calculated to eliminate random cracking and to concentrate movements in the constructed joints. The problem of making these joints water tight has been the subject of much engineering research. The use of rubber waterstops for this purpose has been normal in many structures in New Zealand for a number of years.

Rubber Waterstops in large concrete pads

All Skellerup’s seals employ the principal of embedding one half of the width of the specially shaped strip of rubber in the concrete on each side of the joint forming a water seal. Many waterstops have bulbs of greater dimension than the web thickness so that when these are embedded in the concrete, they resist any tendency of the waterstop to be pulled out when the joint opens. The pressure between the side bulbs and the concrete induced by opening a joint also increases the resistance to water percolating around a waterstop.

Hollow center bulbs are incorporated in some seals to provide maximum flexibility and to reduce shearing stresses in the seals when formed transversely. Other types are designed with straight uniform thickness webs between side bulbs for sealing straight expansion and contraction joints where no shear movement between adjoining sections of the concrete is anticipated.

The sectional seals are extruded and vulcanised in the factory to a standard length of 3 metres and with a maximum continuous length of 12 metres.
Additional joining of the lengths by either hot vulcanising in the field or moulding of corners in the factory is quite common.

While standard profiles are available, Skellerup's technicians can develop a custom made profile to suit your needs.
