History Timeline

1910 George Skjellerup, a Danish Australian, opens his first store in Christchurch, The Para Rubber Company, (named after Para, a source of rubber in Brazil), selling a variety of rubber products including milking machine components.  Para is the founding company of the Skellerup Group.

1919 Para lists on the stock exchange with a nationwide chain of stores.

1939 Empire Rubber Mills factory opens to make milking machine rubberware. The first inflation (liner) is produced.

Marathon Rubber Footwear commences manufacture of canvas footwear.

1943 The first gumboot is manufactured on the present site in Christchurch.

1948 Retail, distribution and manufacturing units consolidated and Skellerup Industries Group of Companies is listed on the stock exchange.

1951 The first export sales to Australia recorded

1955 George Skjellerup, the company founder and Chairman dies.  His son,  Valdemar Skellerup  becomes Managing Director.

1964 First conveyor belts made by the Rotocure division of Skellerup.

1967 First production of Butylclad, waterproofing membrane for residential and commercial roofing applications.

1969 Skellerup becomes the founding sponsor of the prestigious New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year competition. This sponsorship ran for 29 years.

1980 L.W. Flynn & Co Ltd, a major manufacturer of milking machine vacuum pumps and components, purchased.  This company, later renamed Flomax International, has since developed significant business in vacuum pumps for the industrial market in the U.S.A. and has recently been absorbed in to Skellerup.

1982 After the death of his brother, Sir Valdemar Skellerup, Peter Skellerup assumes the Chairmanship of Skellerup Industries.

1983 Ultralon Products Ltd acquired. It is the sole manufacturer of polyethylene and ethyl vinyl acetate products in New Zealand.

1987 Skellerup becomes a subsidiary of Brierley Investments Ltd and is de-listed.

1991 Turnover reported at $NZ180 million with exports totalling $NZ20 million.

1993 Brierley listed Skellerup Industries on the Stock Exchange as part of the Skellerup Group.
 
1996 Skellerup Group acquired by Maine Investments Ltd and de-lists.
    
Skellerup gains ISO9002 accreditation

Skellerup Industries Pty Ltd established in Australia to service the mining industry.

1998 In a restructuring of Maine Investments, Viking Pacific purchases Skellerup and Flomax International, manufacturers of dairy/industrial vacuum pumps.

2002 Skellmax Industries acquires these companies and returns them to public ownership via a share float of 100 million shares. Annual turnover $NZ103 million.

2003 DEKS Rubber Pty Ltd, Australia acquired.  Deks is the largest manufacturer of rubber roof flashings and washers.

Stevens Filterite, major Australasian supplier of milk filters, acquired.

2004 Skellerup Jiangsu Ltd manufacturing facility in China becomes operational with the production of gumboots.

Acquisition of Alucobond, importers, manufacturers and installers of aluminium composite exterior cladding panels for commercial and high-end residential building.  Now trades as Skellerup Alucobond.

Thorndon Rubber
and Rubber Services suppliers of industrial rubber products and printing roller recovery services, acquired.

Bisleys Environmental Ltd, New Zealand supplier of geo-synthetic membrane lining systems for landfills and liquid containment integrated into the Skellerup Group.

2005 Jenco Products Australia, suppliers of rubber products to the plumbing industry acquired and integrated in to Deks Industries.

United Kingdom based, Ambic Equipment, the world’s leading supplier of dairy hygiene equipment acquired.

2006 Acquisition of Gulf Rubber, designers and manufacturers of technical rubber and associated polymer products.

Skellmax Industries changes name to Skellerup Holdings Ltd.

2007 Acquisition of Tumedei SpA, Italy, manufacturer of custom-deisgned technical rubber products.

2008 Divestment of Containment Systems, Conveyor & Mining and Roofing & Waterproofing businesses.

2009 Divestment of Alucobond.
